Grim Reaper Gamers GOTY Results
It’s the end of the year and the Grim Reaper Gamers Community looks back at all the best games of 2018. We polled our community to determine what were the most influential or most played games within the GRG community?
We had a few surprises, but it mostly came down to what you saw most of GRG playing throughout the year. Even had a nail-biter for Game of the Year with the top four titles all within a vote or two of each other. So take a read and let us know in the comments if it’s what you expected.
Our categories are as follows:
- Best Sports / Racing Game
- Best Survival / Battle Royal Game
- Best DLC or Expansion Pack
- Best Action or Adventure Game
- Best Single Player Game
- Best First Person Shooter
- Best Multiplayer Game
- Best Co-Op Game
- Best Game of 2018
Best Sports / Racing Game
Forza Horizon 4
It’s no surprise Forza Horizon 4 takes this year’s Best Sports / Racing Game category. Taking Forza’s racing pedigree and toning it down to a more casual friendly game is one of the main reasons Forza Horizon 4 did so well. After all, casual gaming is the definition of Grim Reaper Gamers. Then you have the huge open world that really feels alive; especially with the weekly weather changes (Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring). One week you will race during the dry summer days, only to be slipping and sliding on ice and snow a few weeks later when winter hits. Finally there’s the graphics and Forza Horizon 4 never disappoints. This game is outright beautiful, especially so on a 4K TV with the Xbox One X. Sometimes it’s hard to remember you’re playing a game.
With all that it’s easy to see why Forza Horizon 4 (and Forza in general) always wins this category.
Runner Up: NBA 2k19
Best Survival / Battle Royal Game
Blackout – Call of Duty Black Ops 4
This year Call of Duty Black Ops 4 decided to throw their hat in the Battle Royale game mode and boy did they really knock it out of the park. CoD’s Blackout is basically the bastard child of Fortnite and PUBG. It takes Fortnite’s fast game play (minus the building) and PUBG’s realistic setting and mixes in the Call of Duty’s gun play that we’ve been accustomed to for over a decade to create an incredibly addictive game mode. Nowadays it seems like every game developer is flooding the market with their version of a Battle Royale game. Most of them fail but Call of Duty shows why it’s a top tier franchise.
Will it topple Fortnite as the Battle Royale King? Probably not but it’s a perfect title for Grim Reaper Gamers whose roots stem way back to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1.
Runners Up: Fallout 76, Fortnite Battle Royale
Best Action or Adventure Game & Single Player Game
Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 won both the Best Action or Adventure game and Single Player Game categories and it’s easy to understand why. This is the biggest and grandest Rockstar game to date. They truly recreated the Wild West and made a game that really feels alive. Players can spend countless hours running the story, side missions and just exploring the world of RDR2. This game is a pure masterpiece and no one can really argue why it received so many perfect review scores.
Bonus GRG points for horse testicle physics.
Best DLC, First Person Shooter, Co-Op, Multiplayer
Destiny 2 – Forsaken
Destiny 2 Forsaken expansion pass was such a huge game changer for Destiny 2 that it’s completely understandable why it cleaned up this year in GRG. Forsaken put Destiny 2 in a great spot as far as playability is concerned. The new quests, game modes and raid offer so much for a gamer to do it’s hard to figure out where to start sometimes.
It’s also easy to see why Destiny 2 Forsaken won both Co-Op and Multiplayer game of the year. The game encourages Clan activities and players can form fireteams of 3 to 6 players depending on the activity. You can run basic quests of 3 guardians in standard PvE, then group up with 6 for PvP in the Crucible or to die repeatedly in a Raid. You could even try your luck in the hottest new game mode called Gambit with a fire team of 4. Gambit is a brand new game mode that combines a PvE Horde mode with a fun side of PvP and is one of GRG’s favorite activities in Destiny. (look for an upcoming private GRG Gambit Tournament).
GRG’s Best Game of 2018
Destiny 2 – Forsaken
2018’s Game of the Year was such a close race it was amazing. Four titles fought for the top spot and one winner emerged once the dust settled. In the end, Destiny 2 Forsaken was declared the winner. It won by a single vote over the other 3 but it won nonetheless.
We can’t say we’re shocked Destiny 2 – Forsaken has won GRG’s Game of the Year title for 2018. The Destiny community within Grim Reaper Gamers is huge and it just continues to grow. Every night we have multiple fire teams grouped up running any number of events. It’s also a community that exemplifies what GRG is really about – being a casual, fun loving group of Adult gamers. They group up, help each other out and just have fun on a nightly basis. And in the end, that’s all we want. Destiny 2 Forsaken makes this not only easy to do but enjoyable as well.
